I bet there are a lot of people who wonder what kind of food Brazilian food is.
When you think of Brazil, what comes to your mind? Is it Soccer, Samba, the Amazon, or perhaps the Olympics? Brazilian food is not often mentioned in the media nor is it a part of people's daily lives, so I bet you don’t know much about Brazilian food.
As you may already know, Brazil is a melting pot of different peoples and cultures from all over the world, in addition to the native populations and their cultures.
Since most Brazilians living in Japan are of Japanese descent, you may think that descendents of Japanese immigrants make up a large part of Brazilian society, but that is not the case. There are immigrants from many other countries like Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Russia, other Asian countries, Arabic countries, and African countries. Since there are so many different cultures in Brazil, there are also that many different culinary cultures as well.
When stepping into a Churrascaria (Brazilian BBQ restaurant) in Brazil, one may even find Sushi at the buffet, or dishes using traditionally Asian vegetables such as Chinese cabbage or daikon radishes.
Italian dishes such as lasagna, Arabic food such as salads and fried foods using kibe (bulger), and Russian food such as stroganoff are also popular in Brazil.
Feijao, which is a bean stew eaten over rice and is a daily staple in the Brazilian diet, is said to have roots in the African culinary culture.
Feijoada, which is another bean stew often eaten on the weekend made with black beans and meat, is said to originate in the African slaves cooking beans with pig ears and tails that the slave masters threw away.
Brazilian food includes a wide range of dishes, from those that are familiar to those that are exotic to the foreign palate.
